Buying Spectacles
Spectacles (plural: spectacles) are a pair of lenses worn on the nose and ears to correct deficiencies in eyesight. They can also be used to ornament the face or as fashion accessories.
The history of spectacles is a window Ray-Ban into the ingenuity and innovation that has been developed over centuries. The earliest form of spectacles were probably invented in northern Italy in the thirteenth century. They were basically two mounted lenses riveted together at the handle ends and held in place by gripping the nose with the hands. They were prone to smashing when the wearer moved and so the invention of frames which could be fixed to the nose and ears, was a major advance. The earliest frames had convex lenses to aid farsightedness and were shown in the a painting by Domenico Ghirlandaio of St. Jerome at his desk, the saint being the patron saint of the spectacle-makers’ guild.
Eyeglasses vs. Contact Lenses: Which Is Right for You
Glasses work by bending light beams as they pass through the cornea and lens. This allows them to converge on the retina at the right distance so that you can see clearly. Spectacles can also be used to magnify objects, which is useful for people with impaired vision or occupational needs. These may be self-contained, like goggles or binoculars, or they may be built into the lenses of regular glasses.
When buying spectacles it is important to get an accurate prescription from a trained eye care specialist. Online eye tests and apps should never be used to replace a professional examination. It is also worth bearing in mind that your spectacles may need to be adjusted from time to time.
