Windshield Repair Limitations
windshield repair is a cost-effective and quick way to address cracks, chips and other blemishes. The process involves a technician injecting the glass with transparent resin that fills and seals damage, restoring structural integrity. Despite its advantages, windshield repair has limitations and not every crack or chip will benefit from it.
Road Debris: Rocks, pebbles and other debris kicked up by other vehicles can crack glass. Weather Conditions: Rapid changes in temperature can cause glass to expand and contract, leading to cracks. Accidents: The force of an impact or sudden braking can cause the windshield to shift and crack.
Sliding, Wooden, or Steel – We Repair All Door Types
The first step in the windshield repair process is to remove any contaminants from the damaged area, including water, dust and insects. This prevents further deterioration and ensures that the resins used in the repair will adhere properly to the glass. Next, the applicator (a small plastic bottle with a sponge-like tip) is loaded with the appropriate resin based on the kit instructions and attached to the windshield. Air is removed by using the injection pump and clear adhesive resin is forced into the cracked area. Once cured with ultraviolet light, the windshield is stronger and clearer than before.
Pits and cracks in the middle of the windshield usually cannot be repaired, but pits on the outer edges can if they are not in the driver’s line of sight. If a crack extends into the plastic interlay between the two layers of glass, or through to the inner layer, it is usually beyond repair and will need to be replaced. In most states, it is illegal to drive with a damaged windshield that obstructs the driver’s view or compromises safety.
